2021.12.05 10:14 Emperor_Sleep After being in my backlog for a year, I finally finished Yakuza 0 and it exceeded a lot of my expectations
TLDR: Yakuza 0 is incredible and I wish I had played it immediately
I first heard of this franchise back during the PS2 days when my father had a disc for it then. Forgot whether it was the first or second game but that was how I first heard of it. Always gave it a pass because I thought this was a hardcore mob game and being a kid I had no appetite for that genre yet.
Fast forward to 2019, I heard about Yakuza 0 from a couple of Youtube videos. By now there were a lot more Yakuza games and I have been hearing the franchise more and more but never really gave it a try or so much as a thought. Hearing Yakuza 0 is a perfect starting point piqued my interest so I put it in the back of my mind. I got the game during the Winter Steam sale in 2020, downloaded it, and said I would definitely play it within a couple of days. Then other games like Persona 5 Royal, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Fallout New Vegas, Divinity Original Sin, and a couple of RPGs decided to make themselves known and wanted me to replay them. So Yakuza 0 was put on hold.
I finally started the game during the second week of November. I've seen a couple of videos on what the game is generally like so the abundance of minigames and side content were expected along with how the game looks and parts of the combat system. I also knew that there were 2 protagonists so that didn't really surprise me as well.
But... that was where everything I expected ended.
The first thing that really impacted me was the voice acting. This is the best voice acted japanese game I have ever experienced. Its even better than some other games and anime because you could really feel what they are saying. It feels so natural, so high quality that I often forgot that these were fictional characters especially during those heavy hitting scenes. They felt like real people. In the heat of the moment, Kiryu, Majima, Nishiki, Lee, Makoto, Oda, they all truly felt like real people.
That leads perfectly into another reason why I love this game so much: the characters. I never expected that I would care about these characters as much as I did. I've seen Kiryu as the main character of the franchise like how Kratos is in GOW or Master Chief in Halo so I thought I would be interacting and relating with him the most thinking he's the best character with no compare. I did not expect to feel so much love and/or hate with Majima, Nishiki, Lee, Tachibana, Oda, Makoto, Nishitani, Kuze, Awano, Shibusawa, Sera, even characters that have no relevance to the main story whatsoever like the Club Sunshine cast and characters solely related to the substories. Each one of these characters hold their own and heavily contribute to the game. And considering that the main story itself is rather short especially if you ignore the optional stuff, that is a feat.
This leads to my favorite part of the game: the story. How the writers turn an empty patch of land that is smaller than most houses into a tool that pushes the story forward is worth of study. The Empty Lot is basically a Macguffin, something which the characters in universe cares about but the viewer does not. And I never really cared about the Empty Lot at all, rather I cared about the complex relationships and plot surrounding that tiny patch of dirt. The story exceeded every expectation I had, so much so that every chapter made me want to play the next one immediately. And I did with chapters 9-17. I physically could not stop myself from pushing forward because once it got me hooked I was just pulled along to the goal. And this is also the only game (so far) that has made me tear up on 4 separate times. 4. TIMES. The few games where I shed a tear I did so only once or twice and those games are few and far between. Whenever someone asks me if the story of Yakuza 0 is any good, that is what I will tell them.
These 3 reasons are so good that the rest is basically icing on the cake. The dessert to a fabulous main course. The massage at the end of a well productive day. I put 119 hours of my life in this game and most were dedicated to side activities. The real estate minigame, cabaret club minigame, pool, pocket racing, and catfights are my personal favorites although majority of my playtime was dedicated to the real estate & cabaret club ones. I know I said the main story is my best part of the game but good lord were there times when I was like "What's a main story?" as I do my 10th run in the cabaret or 15th pool game in a row.
The charm is also there. Playing the game was nowhere how I thought it was like during the PS2 days. Sure it can tug heartstrings when it wants to but it also kicks back and opens a six pack when the time is right. This light/heavy thematic balance is nowhere near like Persona which was my top standard before Yakuza.
The weakest part of the game however, at least for me, is the combat. I can get there is a lot of charm and style there too and I enjoyed it a lot, especially the different heat executions, but fighting itself is kinda meh. Its how I felt with the traditional Assassins Creed combat system where the animation can get in the way and aiming for the target is sometimes a struggle in itself. Its nowhere like the 2018 God of War which is my gold standard in real time melee combat. But I enjoyed it well enough to where I maxed out 4 fighting styles. The only ones I didn't care were Rush and Breaker because they're simply not my style. I did love playing Beast with Kiryu and Slugger with Majima and being a walking tank is a really good feeling.
With everything said and done, it has been a thrill playing Yakuza 0. Now my big predicament is do I play Yakuza 1-6 or go straight to Yakuza Like a Dragon? I am highly interested with Like a Dragon's turn based combat system and the new protagonist but I feel I might be missing out on a whole lot of I skip 1-6. Another problem for another day though because I want to let the ending linger for a bit and because I started to get burned out by the end. But, and I can say this with the utmost confidence, Yakuza 0 is my first Yakuza game but definitely not the last.

There is a whole thread by Fahad Desmukh where he is sharing the videos by TLP and Ertugul and how the violence and the content showed in that drama was used by TLP to incite violence against people who they think are against Holy Prophet and Islam. The similarities were uncanny and I’m ashamed that our PM was promoting that shit show
